Description
There are creatures that live on the borderline between myth and reality. The saola, known as the “Asian unicorn,” is one of the rarest and most elusive animals on Earth. Through the Wildfade concept, I seek to capture this almost invisible existence, where the animal seems to dissolve before it can even be found:
- The chaos of texture: The background and surroundings of the canvas are dominated by a storm of wild splatters and stains. This visual chaos mirrors the dense, impenetrable rainforests of the Annamite Range (between Laos and Vietnam) where it hides, but it also reflects the urgency of its situation: a blurred trail of a species whose exact numbers are unknown, with estimates warning that only a few dozen individuals might remain.
- Brushstrokes that dissolve the body: Looking closely at the saola’s coat, the realistic brushstrokes blend and merge directly with the surrounding splatters. The animal’s body disintegrates into the canvas just as its presence fades from the real world due to intensive commercial snaring and habitat loss. It is the visual chronicle of a silent disappearance.
- The enigmatic gaze: Amidst this explosion of fluid paint and moving textures, the clarity and stillness of its eyes stand out. It is the focal point of an animal that keeps its mystery intact, defying the surrounding chaos and connecting with the viewer through a sense of pure, wild mysticism.
A piece that invites us to protect what we can barely see, turning the canvas into a tribute to the rarity, mystery, and fragility of wildlife.
